5Thule 604 Ascent Top Carrier
By T. Temple
I just used this carrier on a 1600-mile round trip from northern Illinois to North Carolina (on a 2005 Astro Van). On the return trip (September 14), we went through extreme hurricane force winds (aftermath from Hurricane Ike) of 75 MPH from all directions in Louisville, KY. The wind downed trees on the interstate, but the carrier held firmly and no rain entered despite an incredible amount of buffeting due to the winds. I was concerned that the sideways and up-and-down effects of severe buffeting might loosen the grips on the crossbar, but the grips were as tight when I arrived home as they were when I left home. I saw two top carriers that had separated from their vehicles and had been run over on I-65...that's how bad the wind was.

When I first got it it fit up well, but one of the saddles that sits on the cross rail broke. I called Thule customer service and they were very nice. They immediately sent four new saddles and said that I must have received one of their earlier units that had substandard saddles. They apparently discovered this recently and were very accommodating. I appreciate their fine customer service, although I am glad I had time to get the saddles before my trip. Suggest that you make certain that you have the most recent saddles.

Shipping service and tracking through Amazon was great, and the price was the best I could find!Thule 604 Ascent 1600 Rooftop Cargo Box (Black)

5604 Ascent 1600 - Excellent Product to Provide More Storage
By Lee F. Milligan
I researched several cargo box models from Thule, Yakima and SportRack for our 2011 Honda Pilot. I chose this model based on user reviews, features and Thule's reputation and my past experiences with their products; I am glad I did. I chose to purchase from Amazon based on their price and free S/H for the item.

First off, I ordered this product on a Thursday evening and it was delivered to me the following Tue. Pilot did a great job of coordinating a delivery time with me and their drivers showed up on time with the product perfectly intact.

Mounting the box is a breeze and it is a perfect fit for the Honda Pilot. I installed on my rack using the OEM crossbars and it attaches snugly. Within 10 minutes I had this box out of it's shipping box, my crossbars spread apart to their furthest positions, and the box mounted securely to my rack. The adjustment knobs in conjunction with the 'pinchers' is a wonderful mounting method, making it fast and eas y. I can't imagine using some of the other methods I saw in the other boxes I considered.

Once mounted, I drove with the box attached for a few days to make sure the mounting hardware was all intact after a bit of usage and to also evaluate wind noise and fuel consumption under various average speeds. I noticed no wind noise (but the Pilot has a relatively quiet cabin to begin with), no noticable change in handling characteristics and maybe a 1 mpg loss in fuel economy. This was after a mix of city streets and highway driving, up to 70-75 mph.

The dual-side opening method for the box is perfect; I imagine loading and unloading this box is going to be quite easy and should we need quick access to anything stored in there while on the road, it would be quite simple to get inside. It seems like it's going to store quite a bit of bags, toys, boxes, etc.

We will be putting it to a real test in about a month when we take it on a ~1700 mile trip to South Florida. With 3 dogs, a 2 year old and another on the way, I'm looking forward to seeing how much free space this will provide us on a family trip. I'll be updating my review after that trip and will be sure to take some pics of the box mounted, to help anyone out there viewing this to get an idea of it's true size.

As for storing this item, I chose to use a Hyloft 45" x 45" ceiling mounted storage shelf and it's a perfect fit. I believe that item is also available here on Amazon for a fair price, but I opted to purchase it from my local home improvement store.

5Spendy, but nice
By JSK
For a final clarification: YES, this box will fit a Subaru Outback/Forester and YES, the factory rack is just fine to support the box. The loaded box weight limit, as recommended by Thule, is 110 lbs. The box itself weighs 37 lbs. The weight limit for the factory Subaru rack on my '06 Forester is 150 lbs (that is for the rails AND the cross-bars). So, the 147 lbs for the cargo box, loaded up to man. specs is within factory rack tolerances on a Subie i.e. NO NEED TO BUY THULE RAILS, TOWERS OR CROSSBARS.

Came full ready to mount. Delivery was great and expedient. Mounted it by myself in about 10 minutes. The thing is CAVERNOUS and should be able to hold plenty of cargo. Minimal wind noise on the highway. When empty, the lid sort of bangs around a little on rough roads, but not enough to be irritating. Seems like a winner to me...
