5Great for Families
By Karl Bielefeldt
We bought this cargo box after reading reviews of people who bought smaller sizes and wished for more room. Yes, it is more expensive, but it has all the room we need for our growing family, and is durable enough that I can easily see it outlasting our vehicle. It is light weight, but I wouldn't call it fragile. The only scenario I can imagine it cracking is through abuse, like someone stepping right on the middle of it or something.

There is a huge amount of space. It has pretty much the same footprint as our three-cushion sofa. I worried that it would protrude off the front badly on our Kia Sedona, but it fits nicely and looks like it belongs there. It's unobtrusive enough that we don't mind just leaving it on there if it's only a couple weeks until the next trip. We borrowed a fabric cargo bag previously, which we always took off when unpacking at our destination because inevitably a strap end would come loose and bang all over the place. This cargo box has no such issues.

Installation was a snap. It took under 10 minutes, including installing the crossbars on our roof rack, which weren't included. Compared to the fabric cargo bag we used previously, this is easier to install, holds more, and is easier to load. The hinges which let you open it from either side are ingenious. It's a little awkward off the car, but feels as natural while on the car as opening a hatch back. Unlike some other models I've read reviews for, this one came fully assembled. Despite its size, it is light enough I could probably put it on the roof myself if necessary, but with my wife helping to lift it, it was very easy.

It rains frequently here, and we haven't had any problems with leaks, but we haven't tested it in rain at freeway speeds yet.

Check out my customer image. It shows the Atlantis 2100 packed and hinged open.

3Strong cargo container, weak hinges...

This Atlantis 2100 cargo box fits our 2010 Toyota Sienna family minivan very well. Any smaller sizes would look too small on the van. The box also fits Toyota's original roof rails and crossbars very well. Made the first 300-mile family road trip just fine.

Pros:

* Fits the 2010 Toyota Sienna van very well with the original Toyota roof racks and crossbars.
* Does not interfere with the rear door when it's open all the way up.
* Carries lots of stuff.
* The car handles just fine with it on top. Hardly noticeable that it's there.
* Looks good on the van.

Cons:

* Heavy. Definitely requires two people to toss it up to the top of the van as well as unmount it. Takes some good arm muscles.
* Will not fit through the garage door while mounted on top of the van.
* Will need a small 3-step ladder to be carried in the van to load and unload cargo.
* I deducted two stars mostly because of the "Flimsy" hin ges on the front and back of the box. It was very bothersome that the hinges flex too much while opening and closing the top box lid, as this causes the box lid to not come down straight and become misaligned with the box below. Also, it was a big deal everytime the hinges "unhinge" from their mounting balls. Takes some pounding from a rubber hammer to get it back to the mounting balls. Became an even bigger deal when this happens while the box is on top of the van.

Verdict:

Despite the flimsy hinges, we decided that it's a keeper! I would have given it the full 5 stars if the front and rear hinges were better designed and more robust.

5Great Buy/Verify your vechile specs
By Ray Lall
The Thule unit creates extra trunk space needed when we use the third row of seats in our Toyota Highlander. Already used it on a 18hr trip, no problem even with water penetration and windy conditions. My only draw back is the 2100 model is too long for the Highlander, it limits the opening of our trunk, and none of the on-line fitting software didn't flag this issue (even the Thule website which fits our vehile with the 2100 Atlantis). However, that's a minor issue to resolve. I unload and take off the unit in less than 10 minutes whenever we are not using it in a 3 row seating travel. The unit is extremely light, ok for one person to put on/take off but easier for two since it's a bit wide and you can prevent scratching your vechile.

Not an online shopper, so this was my largest on-line purchase to date.
Decided upon using Amazon due to their reputation and past record in delivery on time (versus the stories read of the other websites offering the same p roduct a bit cheaper). The call home to arrange a convienient time of delivery was a good touch of service.
