Product Description

Family camping trips can be a little cramped, as even the smallest tents, sleeping bags, and backpacks take up a ton of space in the car--and that doesn't account for the coolers, camping chairs, canopies, and family dog. Enter the Yakima SkyBox 18 rooftop cargo box, which stores a bunch of your gear in a single, out-of-the-way location. Designed to fit crossbar spreads as short as 24 inches, the SkyBox 18 includes quick-installation mounting hardware that accommodates round, square, and most factory crossbars. More importantly, the SkyBox 18 offers 18 cubic feet of storage space, so you don't have to cram everything in the trunk or back seat. Thanks to the drag-minimizing aerodynamic shape, the cargo box won't dramatically boost your gas consumption on long road trips. Other details include an extra-stiff lid that vibrates less than other cargo boxes and is easier to open and shut with one hand; an integrated track system for such accessories as a cargo net or base pad; a new lid shape that's easier to grip; an improved security latch that keeps your stuff safe; and a black matte anti-scratch finish. Also equipped with SKS locks, the SkyBox 18 measures 92 by 36 by 16 inches (L x W x H).

5Great engineering and design
By Pirenne
Yakima has done a great job with this skybox which apparently was upgraded in 2009. The casing is heavy duty enough so that the upper shell stays up when it is raised. The upper shell can be raised from either side. Cords are attached to the upper shell so that it is easy to lower. The locking handles on the sides are sturdy and work well. The attachment system is amazingly easy to use and sturdy--no need to use tools or thread bolts. Attaching it to cross bars is easy and quick. The unit stays on the cross bars securely and I did not notice any road noise (although my cross bars produce a hum). It mates with most cross bars. If you are comparing this with the Yakima Pro model, note that while the Pro costs a lot more, the only difference with the Pro is that you get two tone unit rather than an all black one and two accessories which you can order a la carte for a lot less (the cargo net, which I also bought and like) or can provide yourself (the bottom pad). The two units are functionally identical.

5Great box for hauling your stuff!
By moderntymes
The engineering of this product is impressive. It opens easily from either side, goes on or off in a minute, won't scratch you car since there are no metal pieces on the bottom, and most importantly, holds a whole lot of cargo! In addition, the redesigned locks don't require you to apply torque to the key to open--there's a separate metal handle for that. It's so long that it was a bit tricky to figure out a way for my (shorter) wife and I to take it on/off the mini van, but we've got that technique down now with her on the side of the car and me in the back.

I think this is a bit sturdier than the similar one from Thule. In fact the only one that I've seen which is better would be the Pro version of the same cargo box, but I wasn't going to pay that much more for essentially the same functionality. I was happy to find this on sale at Amazon!

4Plenty of extra storage
By J. Ranonis
I have just purchased this car top carrier after borrowing a friends Thule box for multiple past trips. The Yakima was better priced and just as functional. Installation was a cinch (literally) easier than the Thule, even though it was a bigger box. Despite it's large size, I was able to install it alone. It held up very well, driving home in a torrential down pour, everything remained completely dry. You can't even tell it is up there while driving, and no noticable change in fuel efficiency. The only knock compared to the Thule is the locking mechanism. Although it is very easy to use, I feel the Thule lock is a little more secure. I was able to lock the Yakima box even though it was a little over-stuffed in the rear, and there was a little gap in the back. I wouldn't be able to close the Thule under those circumstances. But, if packed appropriately, that is not an issue.
