5Yakima Skybox Looks and Works Great, but I had a rocky start
By Hideki
I ordered my Yakima Skybox for Christmas travel and have only tested it on a five hour trip from New Jersey to Maryland and back, but I used it fully loaded and in some fairly high winds, and didn't even know it was there. The spring loaded top opens effortlessly on either side. It looks great with the shiney onyx finish that matches the onyx black exterior of my Acura MDX. I found that the 16 cubic foot Skybox was just right for my needs and looked proportional to the size of my car. I had one disaster that was entirely my fault. Since I had no help to lift it onto the car, I used a kayak hoist to raise the Skybox into the ceiling of my garage in preparation for driving the car in and lowering it down onto the roof of the car. But the Skybox slipped out the straps and fell all the way to the garage floor, nose first. Much to my dismay, this caused some deep scratches on the top, but amazingly there were no cracks or other damage. That was impressive. Fortunately, the scr atches are not visible when the Skybox is in place, and I will be contacting Yakima to find out how to repair them. I couldn't find anything on their website addressing this issue. After that I had another crisis that might have been avoided if there were some kind of warning or clarification in the instructions. The instructions give the impression that you cannot open one side without fully closing or locking the other side, but once I got the Skybox securely mounted to the roof rack, I opened it on one side, and found that the opposite side was not latched, so the whole cover flopped around uncontrollably such that I was afraid that the spring supports would get swisted out of their mountings. With the help of my wife on the other side of the car, holding the opposite side down, I was finally able to secure it, and after that, the Skybox worked without a problem. Despite a rocky beginning, I am very happy with my Skybox and would recommend it highly.
