Product Description

Family camping trips can be a little cramped, as even the smallest tents, sleeping bags, and backpacks take up a ton of space in the car--and that doesn't account for the coolers, camping chairs, canopies, and family dog. Enter the Yakima SkyBox 16 rooftop cargo box, which stores a bunch of your gear in a single, out-of-the-way location. Designed to fit crossbar spreads as short as 24 inches, the SkyBox 16 includes quick-installation mounting hardware that accommodates round, square, and most factory crossbars. More importantly, the SkyBox 16 offers 16 cubic feet of storage space despite its short profile, so you don't have to cram everything in the trunk or back seat. Thanks to the drag-minimizing aerodynamic shape, the cargo box won't dramatically boost your gas consumption on long road trips. Other details include an extra-stiff lid that vibrates less than other cargo boxes and is easier to open and shut with one hand; an integrated track system for such accessories as a cargo net or base pad; a new lid shape that's easier to grip; an improved security latch that keeps your stuff safe; and a matte anti-scratch finish. Also equipped with SKS locks, the SkyBox 16 measures 81 by 36 by 15 inches (L x W x H).

5Sweet Box! Not a thing to complain about.
By D. Menes
I was looking for a cargo box that would fit the new style Subaru Outback (2010 and up) without interfering with the rear hatch, which apparently is a problem with the new integrated roof racks on the Outback. I found the Skybox 16s was one of the few boxes that would fit without hitting anything.

The box arrived about 3 weeks after placing the order with free shipping. I put the box on the car in about 15 minutes without reading the instructions, adjusted it once to straighten it out and it has been great ever since. The only tricky part was getting the key removed from the inside the box when I was unpacking it, but that was me not thinking it through. The shape and titanium color looks great on the white Subaru too, I'm glad I didn't get the cheaper unpainted version.

I've lost about 1.5 miles per gallon, which is a little better than what I expected. There is a tiny whoosh at speed, but the wind noise on the highway is actually much less than I h ad anticipated, and truthfully I don't hear it unless I slide the sunroof interior visor open. I haven't experienced any drama with crosswinds yet. The aerodynamics seem to be quite well sorted out.

The mechanisms in the box are ingenious with the duel side openings, all the hardware works great, and appears to be sturdy. The tie downs and spider web bungee all work well, the thin neoprene pad it comes with may have to be glued down or something, as it seems to roam a little. I've had many Thule products in the past and always found them a little less ergonomic than the Yakima stuff, and this box reinforces that opinion.

Check your skis first, if you have cross country or old school long non-parabolic downhill skis you will have a problem. My 18x-something cm length skis are a tight fit, I have to wedge them a little sideways. I guess that's the penalty for fitting the Subie. The box is quite tall, so I can get quite a bit of cargo in there too.
Very satisfied with the cargo box and would highly recommend it.

5Used for suitcase on 2009 GMC Acadia
By N. Stahl
I bought a new 2009 GMC Acadia and found that I didn't have enough suitcase space for 6 vacationers. We were able to put 2 medium suitcases and one small suitcase in this luggage carrier along with our beachtowels. The box fits well and the 16S Yakimaa Skybox Pro doesn't interfer with the antenna. Just keep in mind that Yakima recommends that you sit this on the GMC cross rails that have to be purchased from the dealer. These rails are recommended for 200 lbs and the box weighs about 47 lbs. We heard no wind noise and were very pleased with the ride.

5Yakima Skybox Pro 16s - Titanium
By The Worker Bee
Love the Yakima Skybox Pro 16s. It's more rigid than the regular skybox, the Titanium color was a nice middle ground between the Silver or Black.
Experienced no vibration with the Skybox Pro 16s. Very minimal noise even at highway speeds. In fact, driving with the box was less noisy than drving with just the cross rails and no box.
The size is great for small to mid-size vehicles. The 16s is able to hold modern hyperbolic shape skiis (shorter than older straight skiis) with snowboards and plenty of other gear.
Just don't exceed vehicles roof weight limitations and you'll be fine. The height allows for greater storage versatility compared to some of the lower profile boxes.
The lock mechanism could be better, but overall I thought this cargo box was superior to other brands and shapes I had looked at. The clamping system to secure the box to the roof rails was quick & easy to use, extremely secure and better than found on other brands.
