5This cargo box is AWESOME. And the price is great!
By JL
I have an Audi Q7. Bought this for my family of 5 for a ski trip to Tahoe.

Pros:
1) It is the best price out there. Purchased with the $125 rebate from Yakima. It was cheaper than a used one on Craigslist.
2) Once you get the settings on the clamps (there are 4 - two front, two back), this thing is really easy to get on and off the car. My wife didn't complain once.
3) Light enough to handle. For the size, it is NO problem for me and my wife to get on an off the car.
4) Minimal wind noise. I thought that it would be noisy. Not too noticeable. However, on my friend's Range Rover Sport (to whom I recommended this unit), it was quite a bit noiser. I think it has to do with how far back you mount it.
5) Sturdy. I was doing 90+ on the highway. Solid - no problems.
6) Size. I fit 5 pairs of skiis and boots, 4 snow boards and boots, 5 helmets. NO problem. And I had room left over! I would not take a road trip without it.
7) The finis h on the SkyBoxPro is NICE. It is a perfect match to my black car. It looks really good - if that matters to you.
8) No noticible gas mileage impact. Could also be that the car is a gas guzzler to begin with. I got 21MPG on the highway. Similar with or without. I was expecting a big difference, but it was similar.
9) Free 2 day shipping with Amazon Prime! Are you kidding me? This thing is sooooo big in the box. Arrived within 2 days (FEDEX). If I bought this at a store, I would have had to mount it on the car at the store to get it home. This way I just put it on my over the weekend on my own time.

Cons:
None, other than now I have to figure out where to store this thing. Maybe ceiling or side wall brackets in my garage. My wife is going to love this new little mini project.

YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH THIS BOX. ESSENTIAL FOR ANY ROADTRIP!

4Yakima SkyboxPro did the trick
By Chris Manders
With our expanding family we didn't want to buy a bigger car just for the long holiday roadtrips. As a result, we purchased the Yakima Skybox to give us the extra storage that we needed. It mounted very easily to my Thule roof rack and was not a big deal to drive with. I was a bit worried during some of the cross winds that we drove through, but it held up. (So Far)......stay tuned......

5Great box
By DRP
I purchased this through Amazon and got it shipped 1 day for $3.99 with Amazon Prime. The cardboard box it came in was broken but the Yakima was wrapped in plastic and didn't have any marks on it.

It was very easy to install although I had my wife help me lift it on the car, but after that it was a cinch, no tools required.

We couldn't be happier. We took it on an 8-hr round trip this weekend. There is very little noise at highways speeds, if any - we can't really be sure. As far as gas mileage, we got a 1 mpg hit driving at about 75 mph. I did not see a mpg hit at speeds below 60 mph. Given that our Jetta Sportwagen TDI normally gets about 40 mpg on the highway, 39 mpg at 75 mph with the Skybox is negligible.

One important note: I recommend mounting the crossbars on the car so that the Skybox sits parallel with respect to the ground. If it's mounted at an angle (e.g. front is higher than the back) it will catch more air and be less aerodynamic, which will increase noise and reduce fuel mileage. Depending on your car, this may not be a problem, but if your car's roofline tapers downward towards the back, you will want to move the cross-bars to where they are at the same height from the ground. Most likely both cross-bars have to go forward as much as possible. This does not impact the placement of the box since the hooks underneath which connect the box to the cross-bars can both be moved backward of forward independently to match the placement of the cross-bars.

BTW, I highly recommend getting the Whispbars (also from Yakima) as your crossbars. They are solid, high quality, look great with no overhang at the ends, and are also aerodynamic to reduce noise and mpg impact.

I would also recommend Yakima over Thule since the back of the Yakima is tapered so it clears the hatch (on wagons/SUV's) when the hatch is open. On our Jetta wagon it allows this 92 in long box to be mounted far enough back so that it doesn't hang over the windshield in the front.

Good luck!
